The guys from Smashing magazine have done a very good job, they have made a list of trends in design 2009. All the trends covered are good explained and have a lot of screenshots of websites following trends.

The bulk of all patents are crap. Spending time reading them is stupid. It’s up to the patent owner to do so, and to enforce them.
