There are many meta tags in html language but for search engines two are favorite. That are description and keywords, as they names say, first represents the description of your page and other has some important keywords for search engines. These tags are not displayed on your page they are visible only for those who look at source of your site and for search engines who index your site.

Meta tags are created mostly because of search engines, to keep your page search engine optimized. Before one decade they ware respected by many search engines, but as the time passed and internet grew, people ware desperately trying to get the highest position possible in the results. And than they developed some techniques to do that. Of course many of them were cheating and many of them include using meta tags. People used keywords and written every possible keyword related to the article and also very long descriptions. Search engine developers have figured out that, so they gave less importance to the meta tags. Now if you make long descriptions or have many keywords you will not land on number one in search results. You will probably be baned by some search engines.
Is there any reason for writing meta tags?
Well yes, but don’t lose much of your time and energy on meta tags. Anything you can do to get better results is good. Meta tags will not hurt you will not screw your work so it is not bad to write them but don’t write too much. There are still many small search engines who give more importance to meta tags.
